TOOLKIT TO END COLORECTAL (Also known as COLON) CANCER
#GiveACrapChallenge: Let’s save lives by making sure our communities that are most challenged by poverty, language barriers, and health conditions like diabetes or heart disease know about colon cancer, know how to prevent it, and have access to the screening tests that can detect it early. Testing saves lives, BUT(T) only if people get tested!
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT COLON CANCER
March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and this year March is more important than EVER before!
Colon cancer is sometimes called colorectal cancer (CRC), which is a term that combines colon cancer and rectal cancer
CRC is one of the most preventable of all cancers BUT(T), 7/10 CRC patients don’t show symptoms. Regular screenings can detect and remove polyps early, BEFORE they turn into cancer
It is the second leading cause of cancer death, when men and women are combined, in the United States BECAUSE
1 in 3 Americans, even those with insurance, are NOT screened when recommended
CRC is not an old white man’s disease – it affects men and women, and all races and age groups
CRC is killing younger and younger Americans – it is a leading cancer killer of young men and women aged 20-49! **
Minority populations, especially African Americans, are 20% more likely to get CRC and 40% more likely to die from it compared to other racial groups
COVID-19 has had a catastrophic effect on CRC screening in 2020 and the impact of this pandemic will continue to evolve during 2021 and beyond
ALL OF THIS REQUIRES TURNING OUR PASSION INTO ACTION!
CRC stops for nothing – not even a global pandemic like COVID-19, and we have a unique opportunity to provide safe options to prevent and detect cancer to those with limited access to care
Multiple screening test options are available, including tests you can do at home
We can have “The Talk” with friends, family and co-workers before it’s too late. We can convince the next generation that there’s nothing wrong with looking at their poop, noticing changes and talking to their doctor when something isn’t right
We can create a new normal for colon cancer – have “The Talk” at a much younger age and Get Screened ON TIME.
The Colon Cancer Foundation’s goal is to raise the roof on CRC awareness and raise funds to help 10,000 people in underserved communities get screened in 2021. Your donation of $35 or more will help cover a screening test for someone in an underserved community.
