September 2006 Newsletter

Hello Everyone & Welcome to our September 2006 Newsletter

The Susan Cohan Colon Cancer Launches the Primary Care Physician Education Series:

This weekend the Susan Cohan Colon Cancer Primary Care Physician (PCP)
Education Series began in Ohio, Colorado, and New York with an
extraordinary response.  Throughout the remainder of 2006 and into 2007
over five thousand Primary Care Practitioners will receive education on
Colon Cancer including the latest standards in prevention, surgical
options, oncology, and the importance of the PCP's role as the patient's
advocate even when a patient moves onto a specialist.

This program represents some of the most aggressive efforts in the fight
against Colorectal Cancer to date. By reaching out to the Primary Care
Physician we are educating and re-educating the first point of contact a
patient will likely have. That contact not only provides the best
opportunity to catch the disease early on, but also has the greatest
impact in helping all of us eradicate this disease. Remember early
detection is the key to prevention & survival from Colon Cancer.

The Series is so very close to our hearts. As I sit here just weeks shy
of Susan's two year memoriam, the importance and meaning of this program
is so clear. No family should have to experience the ramifications of
late detection or mis-diagnosis, as we endured with Susan. We have also
gained much of our knowledge, inspiration and impetuous from all of you;
your heartfelt calls, letters, and E-mails. There has been a need and we
are listening.

There is no reason that anyone should leave a Primary Care Doctor, an
Internist, a Geriatric Physician, a Nurse Practitioner, or an OBGYN
office without recommended screening. We also understand that many
patients aren't of typical age, but they know their bodies and need to
be heard, especially when dealing with difficult or out of the ordinary
symptoms. We are saddened and angered each time we share the story with
someone that lost a loved one because the symptoms were missed by the
medical professional that they trust the most.

We are convinced that this will change the entire scope of how the
medical community views testing. The technology is available; we strive
to communicate the benefits of using it; early-on. Together we will
fight for the medical companies to support this initiative to reach tens
of thousands of doctors in 2007.  Special thanks to our initial
partners: Pri-Med (a leader in providing Medical Conferences and
Continuing Medical Education to Medical Professionals and Ethicon
Endo-Surgery, and Johnson & Johnson for their support.

Susie's Cause 5 K Run & Family Walk:
The Susie's Cause 2nd Annual 5K Run & Family Walk in our home city of
Baltimore was a great success. Literally hundreds of participants,
coming from as far away as New York City, came together to celebrate
Susan's life and the Foundation's mission.

Susie's Cause Is Being Heard & Is Touching Many Lives:

As we have expressed throughout, our quest is to provide education to
the people most affected by Colon Cancer.  Currently, we are affiliated
with the following:

  • We are recognized in leading websites including Black Men in America and Black Star News; that reach a demographic greatly in need of education regarding early screening. As mentioned in previous Newsletters, the Black community has the highest incidence of Colon Cancer of any racial or ethnic group.  We will also be exhibiting and speaking at the Tavis Smiley Road to Health in Los Angeles celebrating Colon Cancer Month.
  • We will be presenting information and will have an educational booth at the National Association of Heath Service Executives (NAHSE) Conference being held in Baltimore, Md., October 13th & 14th, 2006. This Association represents over 500 health care leaders
    from the African American community.
  • We are forging a relationship with the Women's Resource Center at Pennsylvania Hospital to provide information and dispel the myths of women and Colon Cancer.
  • The journey continues at the Fall Lifestyles Show at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md. reaching out to tens of thousands of participants.
  • Our Sharing, Caring & Surviving Colon Cancer Symposiums are continuing to launch nationally. Columbia South Carolina residents are invited to join us at University of South Carolina's Russell House On October 24th (8:30 am to 1:00 pm). Also occurring that day our Save Our Parents program just outside the Russell House (9:00 am to 3:00 pm).
Check out our Events on site for more information. This dual venue will launch in Puerto Rico in November 2006. All of these events enable us to build relationships with some of the top medical specialists and institutions in the country to provide you with the most current information and contacts while saving many lives.
