Dr. Fuhrman's Insights

DIET CAN PROMOTE OR PREVENT COLON CANCER
Over 100,000 new cases of colon cancer occurred in the U.S. in 2009. Most colon cancer cases occur in people with no family history genetics are thought to play only a small role in the development of colon cancer.  Colon cancer is most prevalent in Westernized societies, whose diets are higher in animal products and processed foods and lower in unrefined plant foods.  Epidemiological studies have suggested that diet is a key contributor to colon cancer risk.  Read Dr. Fuhrman's full article

News and Updates

MARCH IS COLON CANCER EDUCATION MONTH
As we get ready to spring forward into April, we first focus on March as Colon Cancer Education Month and bring your attention to supporting those in need, remembering loved ones lost, and continuing our battle to eliminate colon cancer as a life threatening disease by promoting colon cancer awareness and screening.

Susie's Cause has been instrumental in getting April designated as National Colon Cancer Screening Month. This April we encourage all of you to join us with events in your cities to recognize Susie's Cause National Colon Cancer Screening Month and to help us in driving screening rates to new highs. You may also join us for our Second Annual Memories Gala in Baltimore to recognize and support Susies Cause and National Screening Month. Learn more about the Memories Gala

WHAT CAN YOU DO LOCALLY FOR COLON CANCER?
We encourage you to duplicate our efforts in your own community by hosting a benefit race, a golf outing, a dinner dance, or an event that you are passionate about in order to help raise money for colon cancer awareness and research.

Please allow our staff to assist you with any helpful information, tools and materials to help with your event. Contact info@coloncancerfoundation.org.

WHO SHOULD GET SCREENED?
Beginning at age 50 (age 45 for African Americans), both men and women at average risk for developing colorectal cancer should use one of the screening tests below. The tests that are designed to find both early cancer and polyps are preferred if these tests are available to you and you are willing to have one of these more invasive tests. Of these the screening colonoscopy is the preferred test. Talk to your doctor about which test is best for you.

If you or your loved one are experiencing any of these risk factors you should talk to their doctor about starting colorectal cancer screening earlier and/or being screened more often. Read more about screening at any age

About Susie's Cause

The Colon Cancer Foundation was founded in 2004, and received 501(c) (3) status on January 19, 2005. The President of the Foundation, David Rodman Cohan, an international business attorney, vigorously launched this Foundation after the tragic loss of his daughter Susan Cohan to colon cancer. Susan is survived by her two young children.

The Susan Cohan Colon Cancer Foundation will work to eliminate colon cancer as a life threatening disease through the development and dissemination of educational programs focused on prevention, early screening and detection, and aggressive therapeutic intervention.
