Susie's Cause: The Susan Cohan Colon Cancer Foundation
July 2010
Hello,

Summer is ON-along with the heat-and so is the much anticipated redesign of the Susie's Cause website! We are very pleased to announce that we are on the way to enhancing our website. Over the past month we reached out to you, our community, with a survey requesting your thoughts on how we can improve our website. Thank you so much for participating! If you were not able to participate in the survey remember you can always submit comments via email.

With a newly formatted website we will reach many more people and provide our followers with improved navigation tools and even more thorough and pertinent information.

Your contributions of support and feedback are crucial to our mission of raising awareness about colon cancer screening. At Susie's Cause we know that starting a movement to expand understanding and spread knowledge comes with many rewards. We are so proud of our supporters, like 3 Dudes in a Canoe, who understand the importance of early detection and take on the challenge of spreading knowledge in their communities in creative ways. Find out more about 3 Dudes in a Canoe in the Upcoming Events section of this newsletter.

Also, we can all spread awareness through our families and friends about Susie's Cause, the national voice of colon cancer. So as always, please continue to post your stories and share our cause with your friends on Facebook.

Our thanks and best of luck to the 3 Dudes in a Canoe!

Thank you,

Robert A. Smith
Executive Vice President

P.S. Your generosity today can make a difference in the daily fight against colon cancer. Make a donation of any amount to show your support.

Dr. Fuhrman's Insights
Do you know the risk factors for developing Colon Cancer?

They include:
  • A personal history of colorectal polyps, previously treated colorectal cancer, or inflammatory bowel disease
  • Race : African Americans are more likely than other racial or ethnic groups to get colorectal cancer
  • Being physically inactive
  • Eating a diet high in fat (especially from red meat)
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol use
  • Eating a diet low in fruits and vegetables
  • Having a family history of colorectal cancers, certain other cancers, and benign colon polyps (Fewer than 10% of colorectal cancers are caused by inherited gene mutations.)
People should talk to their doctor about starting colorectal cancer screening earlier and/or being screened more often if they have one any of these colorectal cancer risk factors.

3 Dudes in a Canoe

Starting July 27, 2010 at 8 am the Moore brothers will be racing 340 miles to raise awareness about preventing colon cancer. The idea for the 3 Dudes in a Canoe team was started when three brothers lost their beloved mother to colon cancer in 2007. They are paddling to raise money for Susie Cause in her honor and you can support them by contributing and by following their progress on Facebook, Twitter, and their blog.

Please make all donations in honor of Kathy Moore or 3 Dudes in a Canoe.

Not enough? Want to do more? You too can plan your own events to raise awareness and contributions just like 3 Dudes in a Canoe. Choose something that is important to you and don't forget to promote it in your community and online. Please let us know about your events and we will promote them too!

About Susie's Cause
The Colon Cancer Foundation was founded in 2004, and received 501(c) (3) status on January 19, 2005. The President of the Foundation, David Rodman Cohan, an international business attorney, vigorously launched this Foundation after the tragic loss of his daughter Susan Cohan to colon cancer. Susan is survived by her two young children.

The Susan Cohan Colon Cancer Foundation will work to eliminate colon cancer as a life threatening disease through the development and dissemination of educational programs focused on prevention, early screening and detection, and aggressive therapeutic intervention.
