Susie's Cause: The Susan Cohan Colon Cancer Foundation
APRIL 2010
 Welcome to our April Newsletter!

We are very excited about this newsletter! Why? Because Spring is finally here? You guessed it. Because Spring means warmer weather, feeling good, and hopefully getting people out of the house to join us for an enjoyable evening at our SECOND ANNUAL MEMORIES GALA to benefit Susie's Cause! Seats are filling up, so email Kim Cohan or call 410-244-1778 today to make your reservation!

Part of feeling good means living a healthy lifestyle, so there also isn’t a better time to get screened and encourage loved ones to get screened than this month - National Colon Cancer Screening Month.

Please spread the word to friends and family about colon cancer risks and prevention to help save a life. We hope you will enjoy some sunshine and check out our latest news, events, and helpful tips!

Thank you,

Robert A. Smith
Executive Vice President

P.S. Your support today and every day makes a difference. Please give to Susie's Cause in support of National Colon Cancer Month!

Dr. Fuhrman's Insights

PROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF DIETARY FLAVONOIDS AGAINST COLON CANCER
Oxidative damage, a byproduct of oxygen-utilizing metabolism, is thought to be involved in the progression of many chronic diseases, including cancers.  The human body has natural antioxidant defenses, but these defenses can be overwhelmed.  Consuming an antioxidant-rich diet can fully enable these defenses.  Many dietary antioxidant molecules have separate beneficial actions in addition to defense against oxidative damage.

Flavonoids are a class of antioxidant molecules that includes isoflavones, flavonols, catechins, and anthocyanins among others.  These molecules are found ubiquitously in plant foods.  The accumulation of evidence is implicating that fruits and vegetables have protective effects against colon cancer, and these effects are theorized to be at least in part mediated by flavonoids.  Currently, dietary flavonoid intake in the Western world is quite low, reflecting the low intake of fruits and vegetables. APRIL IS SUSIE'S CAUSE NATIONAL COLON CANCER SCREENING MONTH
Susie's Cause has been instrumental in getting April designated as National Colon Cancer Screening Month. This April we encourage all of you to join us with events in your cities to recognize Susie's Cause National Colon Cancer Screening Month and to help us in driving screening rates to new highs. A SUCCESSFUL MARCH EVENT WITH CARMEN MARC VALVO AND NEIMAN MARCUS
Last Month CCF invited you to meet designer, Carmen Marc Valvo. Thank you to Neiman Marcus and Carmen Marc Valvo for this amazing event.  The show was beautiful.  Special thanks to all who shared this with us and thank you for your continued support. CCF would not be able to celebrate our great achievements like, April as National Colon Cancer Screening Month, without the best supporters in the world! See you at the Gala!

TIME TO SPRING FORWARD AND GET SCREENED!
Beginning at age 50 (age 45 for African Americans), both men and women at average risk for developing colorectal cancer should use one of the screening tests below. The tests that are designed to find both early cancer and polyps are preferred if these tests are available to you and you are willing to have one of these more invasive tests. Of these the screening colonoscopy is the preferred test. Talk to your doctor about which test is best for you.

If you or a loved one is experiencing any risk factors, you should talk to your doctor about starting colorectal cancer screening earlier and/or being screened more often.

About Susie's Cause
The Colon Cancer Foundation was founded in 2004, and received 501(c) (3) status on January 19, 2005. The President of the Foundation, David Rodman Cohan, an international business attorney, vigorously launched this Foundation after the tragic loss of his daughter Susan Cohan to colon cancer. Susan is survived by her two young children.

The Susan Cohan Colon Cancer Foundation will work to eliminate colon cancer as a life threatening disease through the development and dissemination of educational programs focused on prevention, early screening and detection, and aggressive therapeutic intervention.
