Save the Parents -
Puerto Rico
This past weekend The Susan Cohan
Colon Cancer Foundation celebrated the opening of its Puerto Rico
chapter with the Save Our Parents & Colon Cancer Awareness Day at the
Puerto Rico Medical Center at the Universidad de Puerto Rico. Hundreds
of students enjoyed the opportunity to learn about colon cancer and
perform colonoscopies and laparoscopic surgery techniques utilizing the
same state of the art equipment that leading Gastroenterologists use on
a daily basis. The G.I. Team was led by our newest board member and
Gastroenterologist Dr. Marcia Cruz-Correa M.D., Ph.D. Trained at Johns
Hopkins University, Dr. Cruz brings her medical expertise and her
passion for helping others to 'Susie's Cause." In addition to the
students, many members of the community attended as well. Reinforcing
the need for our program, many hospital staff members attended, and
after attending the program, agreed to schedule their colonoscopy. A
special thanks to Olympus for generously donated their state of
the art equipment for the students to experience, Sanofi-Aventis for
their economic support, and Miguel' angel Sisamone and the American
Cancer Society Puerto Rico for their support.
Take home literature was provided to
each student to deliver to their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles
to encourage them to be screened for colon cancer.
A contract between students and
parents was distributed to every student, to be signed by Parents and
returned to the school has proven to increase screening and save lives.

the fields of clinical research, treatment and education, as well as
members of the life sciences industry, will come together to critically
review the latest advances in both the science and medicine of
colorectal cancer and produce, in lay terms, practical evidence-based
guidelines for diagnosis, treatment and care aimed at optimizing
treatment outcomes. The proceedings of this dynamic symposium will be
cybercast across the nation to physicians who cannot be in attendance
and captured in enduring educational materials (such as CD-ROM
and/or satellite, peer-reviewed journal publications) that will allow
for rapid dissemination of this live-saving information to the treating
community and the public at large. |
