Colon Cancer Screening Made Fashionable in Palm Beach

On January 21st, Saks Fifth Avenue on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach hosted an elegant evening of couture fashion featuring the designs of Carmen Marc Valvo. Carmen’s designs have been worn by some of the world’s most recognized women including Katie Couric, Kate Winslet, Vanessa Williams and most recently by Taylor Swift. As a colon cancer survivor, Carmen has been working with Susie’s Cause to educate the public about the importance of colon cancer screening and options for early detection. The fashion event was sponsored by Quidel Corporation, manufacturer of the QuickVue® brand of FIT (fecal immunochemical test).

Over 150 guests were treated to a fashion show featuring Carmen’s latest evening and swimwear creations while enjoying delicious hors d’oeuvres and sipping Carmen’s signature cocktail created just for this event. Guests included members of Palm Beach society as well as many physicians who are committed to increasing awareness of the need for early detection of colorectal cancer. Our most important guests were those who have lost the people closest to them because of this disease, including Andrea Rieger who lost her 22-year old daughter to colon cancer. Stefanie Rose Rieger was a beautiful college student, studying abroad when she was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer.  Despite a family history of the disease, Stefanie wasn’t screened because of her young age. A simple test might have prevented this family’s heartbreak.

The evening event was also successful in helping Susie’s Cause raise funds so that we can continue with our cutting-edge national education and support programs.

We could feel the pride of the Cohan family and the warmth of Susan’s glow surrounding us as we were joined by her two children, Demi and Alex, who lost their mother much too young. It’s these important guests who inspire us to work hard and continue to develop new and innovative grassroots campaigns to make screening for colon cancer fashionable.

Today we go back to work in planning our education and patient support events throughout the United States. We are very excited to be hosting our second annual Memories Gala to be held on Friday, April 16th at Valley Mansion in Cockeysville, Maryland. In 2009, the Governor of Maryland designated April as National Colon Cancer Screening Month. Susie’s Cause is proud to be the National Voice of Colon Cancer leading the drive to help save lives and to decrease the incidence of the second leading cause of cancer deaths of men and women in the United States.
